Coca-Cola “Shops of Hope”
Role: Director, Editor and Writer
Overview
The Coca-Cola “Aasha Ko Pasal” campaign was a heartfelt tribute to the resilience and hope provided by local shopkeepers, store owners, and delivery workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Shot entirely with real people and businesses, the campaign emphasized the vital role these community members played in keeping their doors open and spirits high when everything else seemed to shut down. Despite the challenges of restricted store hours, we captured the essence of gratitude and togetherness in a series of authentic, uplifting vignettes.

Synopsis
The commercial opens with the first rays of sunlight peeking through an old Nepali alley, setting the tone for a new day of hope. We see shopkeepers and owners opening their doors, preparing their spaces with safety measures like wearing masks, sanitizing their hands, and ensuring cleanliness. A delivery driver sanitizes his motorbike before setting out, embodying the commitment to keep serving the community. Throughout the ad, we highlight moments of connection: a shopkeeper’s smile through a mask, a customer and a vendor sharing a brief but meaningful exchange, and a delivery driver bringing meals, complete with chilled bottles of Coca-Cola, to a waiting family. The campaign ends with heartfelt expressions of gratitude and a message to continue supporting these local “Shops of Hope.”

I wrote the script to authentically capture the spirit of the pandemic era, focusing on themes of resilience and gratitude. Using poetic and heartfelt voiceovers, I emphasized the idea that even the simplest actions, like keeping a store open or delivering a meal, carried immense significance during these times. The script highlighted the daily efforts of real people, turning ordinary moments into extraordinary acts of hope. Care was taken to ensure the language resonated with the community and honored the experiences of those featured.

Directing this campaign was an exercise in capturing genuine emotion. Working with real shopkeepers and delivery workers required a sensitive and flexible approach to keep them comfortable on camera. We adhered to strict COVID-19 protocols, conducting efficient 2-hour shoots each morning over a week. I collaborated closely with the cinematographer to utilize natural light, ensuring the visuals felt warm and hopeful. The direction emphasized real, unscripted moments, like a smile that reaches the eyes despite a mask or a sincere namaste, to authentically convey the campaign’s message.

In the editing room, I wove together a narrative that balanced the hustle of daily routines with quiet moments of human connection. The pacing was deliberately gentle yet purposeful, mirroring the rhythm of the community’s perseverance. I focused on transitions that underscored the theme of hope, and the music was synchronized with key visuals to evoke a sense of unity and appreciation. The final cut emphasized Coca-Cola’s presence as a symbol of gratitude, integrated seamlessly into scenes to enhance, rather than overshadow, the human stories.
